Upper West Side Entry

Southside Workshop Inc. was originally commissioned by the general contractor, J. Thomas Construction, to fabricate new exterior entry doors for this 1891 Renaissance Revival brownstone, which had the stooped removed. During the interior demolition phase, the contractor’s crew discovered a small piece of the original entryway paneling inside a closet that had been sheet-rocked over. Upon removal of the sheetrock ceiling, the contractor also discovered that about 75 percent of the original ceiling panels were in good condition.

We cleaned the painted over original wall paneling pieces and were able to extrapolate the molding and paneling profiles and made molding knives to match it. In order to recreate the feeling of the house’s original grand entrance, we integrated the paneling to conceal the double doors leading to the parlor floor apartment entrance. The missing ceiling components were also reproduced and stained to match.

The old and new material was intermixed for a seamless appearance. All the components were made with solid mahogany, stained and varnished.
