Madison Square Garden Apartment

David Bucovy Architect breathed new life into this 1980’s pied-a-terre overlooking Madison Square Park in the Flatiron District by taking advantage of the apartments best feature, its abundance of natural light, and reconfiguring the space to create an open and spacious layout. A white palette dominated the three-bedroom apartment, with bleached and pickled oak wood floors and whitewashed walls. An interplay of colors and textures added warmth to the minimalist interiors.

Southside Workshop Inc. was commissioned to fabricate all interior millwork in the renovated apartment.  The “eye-candy” of the open-plan kitchen was a 2”-thick island countertop made from reclaimed long-leaf yellow pine beams, sourced from the old Putnam Rolling Ladder Company factory building, with traditional joinery and breadboard ends. Countertop finger joints were used around the existing structural column that David Bucovy seamlessly incorporated into the kitchen island. The custom cabinetry had finger pulls routed into the drawer faces so that no hardware protruded, creating a sleek, modern look in keeping with the kitchen’s design.

The teak vanity in the bathroom had a similar detail, with pulls routed into the top and a low-luster finish. Maintaining the same contemporary aesthetic as the kitchen, the lacquered, custom-milled cabinetry kept toiletries out of sight.
