Carroll Gardens Townhouse

This beautiful renovation of a mid-19th century Cobble Hill townhouse was the brainchild of Mike Diamond of the Beastie Boys and his wife, filmmaker Tamra Davis, in collaboration with the architectural husband-and-wife team, John and Jill Baratoglou. The extensive renovation included reconfiguring the upper floors’ layout to better suit the lifestyle of a modern family. The interiors are a balance of the historic details and an eclectic palette of color, pattern and texture. The architects directed Mike D to Southside Workshop Inc. as a source of custom milled, reclaimed wood paneling. He was clear about using reclaimed wood for the wall paneling in the master bath and for the kitchen cabinets, but wanted it to look more refined. We sourced long-leaf yellow pine for the industrial-chic master bathroom wall, milled it to the desired thickness and finished it with several coats of an ultra-matte varnish. For the kitchen, our job was to match existing cabinets with new ones. We used flat-sawn walnut and custom-matched the veneer to get the same look, so it was impossible to distinguish the new ones from the originals.
